Oil starvation is one of the leading causes of catastrophic engine failure in high-performance GM Ecotec engines. The good news is that most oil starvation problems can be prevented with proper engine preparation, regular maintenance, and an effective oil control strategy.

What is oil starvation? It happens when the engine oil supply cannot reach the oil pump pickup consistently, causing low engine oil pressure and, in severe cases, accelerated wear or catastrophic failure.

Preventing oil starvation isn't about installing one part or making one modification. It requires understanding how the entire lubrication system works and ensuring every component supports a continuous supply of engine oil to the engine.

Maintain the Correct Oil Level

The oil pump can only draw oil that is surrounding the pickup screen. If the oil level drops too low, the pickup becomes more susceptible to uncovering during cornering, braking, and acceleration.

Running even one quart low can significantly increase the risk of uncovering the pickup under high-G conditions.

Likewise, overfilling the crankcase is not recommended. Excessive oil levels can increase crankshaft windage, contribute to oil aeration, and reduce lubrication efficiency.
