Why BK Racing Chose the OEM Ecotec Oil Pan for High-G Racing
When developing the BK Racing Ecotec Oil Control Pan, we had a choice to make.
Should we build an entirely new oil pan from scratch, or should we start with an OEM GM oil pan and improve the one area that matters most for racing?
After extensive research and evaluating how the Ecotec lubrication system operates, we chose to build upon the factory GM oil pan.
That decision wasn't driven by cost.
It was driven by engineering.
We believed the factory pan already provided an excellent foundation. Our goal was to improve its oil control performance under racing conditions rather than redesign components that GM had already optimized.
GM Already Solved Many of the Hard Problems
OEM manufacturers spend millions of dollars designing engine components.
The factory Ecotec oil pan wasn't simply built to hold oil.
It was engineered to provide:
- Proper oil pump pickup depth.
- Correct oil drain-back characteristics.
- Structural rigidity.
- Excellent gasket sealing.
- Factory fitment.
- Ground clearance.
- Long-term durability.
- Production quality.
For a production engine, the OEM oil pan performs exceptionally well.
Rather than replacing these proven features, we chose to preserve them.
The Factory Pan Was Designed for the Street
Although the OEM pan is an excellent design, it was engineered for passenger vehicles operating under normal driving conditions.
Street cars rarely experience sustained high-G cornering, repeated heavy braking, or continuous high-RPM operation.
Circle track racing is completely different.
Modern racing tires generate significantly more grip than the factory lubrication system was designed to accommodate.
As cornering forces increase, centrifugal force pushes oil away from the pickup and makes oil movement inside the sump much more aggressive.
That isn't a flaw in the factory design.
It's simply operating outside the conditions for which it was originally engineered.
Oil Control Was the Missing Piece
As we studied the Ecotec lubrication system, one thing became clear.
The factory oil pan already did an excellent job supporting the engine under normal operating conditions.
The area with the greatest opportunity for improvement was controlling oil movement inside the sump during racing.
Rather than redesigning the entire oil pan, we focused our engineering effort where it would provide the greatest benefit.
Our goal was to improve oil control while preserving everything GM had already gotten right.
Why We Didn't Simply Build a Larger Pan
A larger oil pan certainly has advantages.
Additional oil capacity helps stabilize temperatures, increases oil reserve, and slows oil degradation.
However, increasing capacity alone does not prevent oil starvation.
Oil starvation occurs because the oil pump temporarily loses access to the oil surrounding the pickup.
The amount of oil in the engine is only part of the equation.
Where that oil is located is often more important.
Instead of concentrating on oil capacity, we concentrated on maintaining pickup coverage during the conditions where oil starvation actually occurs.
What Does a Race Oil Pan Do?
A race oil pan is designed to keep oil where the pickup can reach it during hard acceleration, braking, and cornering.
Unlike a stock pan, it focuses on oil control under high-G racing conditions rather than everyday driving.
That usually means better baffling, improved drain-back, and more consistent pickup coverage when centrifugal force tries to move oil away from the sump area the pump relies on.
OEM Quality Matters
Starting with an OEM GM oil pan offers several advantages beyond lubrication performance.
Factory pans provide:
- Proven casting quality.
- Factory gasket sealing surfaces.
- Precise oil pump pickup geometry.
- Excellent dimensional consistency.
- Factory mounting accuracy.
- Reliable long-term durability.
Using a genuine GM pan also means our oil control system fits exactly as intended without requiring custom engine modifications.
By starting with a proven foundation, we can focus our engineering on improving race performance rather than recreating an already successful design.
Designed Specifically for Circle Track Racing
Everything about our oil control system was developed with circle track racing in mind.
Unlike street vehicles, circle track cars spend much of every lap under sustained lateral loading.
Those conditions place exceptional demands on the lubrication system.
By combining GM's proven oil pan design with improved internal oil control, we created a lubrication system better suited for the demands of high-G racing while maintaining the reliability and fitment of the original equipment.
Improving, Not Replacing
At BK Racing, we don't believe every factory component needs to be replaced.
GM engineers built an excellent oil pan for the job it was intended to perform.
Our goal wasn't to reinvent it.
Our goal was to improve it for a completely different environment.

Rather than redesigning a component that already offered excellent fitment, durability, sealing, and pickup geometry, we concentrated on improving the one area most critical to racing performance—oil control.

Because sometimes the best way to improve a great design isn't to replace it.
