Ecotec Intake Valve Installation Checklist: Seats, Guides, Lash & Clearances
Prepare the Head Around the Actual Components
Install the HF35.6 intake valves through a normal professional valve job on a compatible head. Inspect the casting, guides and seats before assuming that the existing surfaces are suitable for the nominal 35.6 mm head. Use the current component specifications and the machinist’s measurements.
Record the engine, head casting, valve version, camshaft part number, rocker version and adjuster arrangement. Keep this record with the engine so later replacement parts can be checked against the same baseline.
Valve, Guide and Seat Checks
Measure the actual stems and guides, assess guide condition, establish required guide clearance, and verify seat contact, concentricity and sealing. Inspect the triple-groove keeper fit with the selected locks and retainer. Confirm the valve tip and seating relationships after the valve job.
Do not assume that a valve which physically fits the guide has acceptable clearance or correct seat contact. The size guide separates the nominal dimensions from the finished assembly requirements.
Spring and Retainer Checks
Measure installed height at every position. Measure spring pressure for that height and the intended lift, then verify coil-bind margin and retainer-to-seal and guide clearance. Inspect rocker-to-retainer clearance with the intended rocker version.
Use the specifications for the selected spring, retainer and seat/seal combination. Changing installed height changes pressure. A high-clearance seal does not eliminate the need to measure the rest of the assembly.
Cam, Lash and Moving Clearance Checks
Select the tip configuration for the cam base circle. Establish rocker contact and lash with the actual hydraulic or solid adjuster arrangement. Check piston-to-valve and valve-to-valve clearance through the relevant crank-angle range using the final cam timing.
A clearance reading at maximum valve lift alone may miss the closest approach to the piston. The method and minimum acceptable clearances should come from the engine builder and component requirements; this checklist does not invent universal clearance limits.
Record Before Final Assembly
Keep a position-by-position record of guide fit, installed height, seat and open pressure, travel margin, retainer clearance and lash. Also record valve seating results, cam timing, piston clearance and the checking conditions. Address discrepancies before closing the engine.
If a measurement is outside the requirements, resolve its cause rather than substituting a different spring or shim without rechecking geometry. Ask BK Racing about component selection, and have a qualified builder establish the complete operating setup.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do these require no head work at all?
No. A normal valve job and the relevant fit and clearance checks are required.
Does this list provide every torque or clearance specification?
No. Use the current specifications for the exact components and engine assembly.
