BK Racing GM Ecotec Performance Exhaust Valves
High-Performance Ecotec Exhaust Valves for 2.0L, 2.2L & 2.4L Engines
The BK Racing Ecotec Performance Exhaust Valves were developed specifically for high-performance and racing GM Ecotec engines. Manufactured from 21-4N stainless steel, fully nitrided after final machining, flow-bench tested, and engineered with an airflow-optimized profile, these are not simply replacement Ecotec exhaust valves.
Our goal was to develop a stock-size performance exhaust valve that could improve airflow through valve geometry rather than relying on an oversized valve head.
That approach has already produced measurable results.
During development with MWR Technologies, our prototype BK Racing Ecotec exhaust valve flowed approximately 3 CFM better than the OEM GM Ecotec exhaust valve on the same cylinder head and flow bench.
Even more impressive, the prototype that produced those results measured slightly smaller than the finalized production valve.
Final BK Racing production exhaust valves measure 30.10–30.20 mm and incorporate the finalized geometry developed through our prototype program.
Why We Developed Our Own Ecotec Exhaust Valve
There are already stainless, nitrided, oversized and Inconel exhaust valves available for the GM Ecotec.
We weren't interested in making another replacement valve.
We wanted to find out whether the factory-size Ecotec exhaust valve could be improved through better geometry.
Instead of simply increasing valve diameter, development focused on how air actually moves around the valve as it opens. The valve head, backside profile, margin, stem transition and overall shape were developed as part of the airflow path through the cylinder head.
That distinction is important.
A larger exhaust valve doesn't automatically mean a better-flowing exhaust valve.
Valve diameter is only one part of the relationship between the valve, seat, throat, combustion chamber and exhaust port. An oversized valve with the wrong profile can potentially offer little improvement—or even negatively affect airflow.
Our prototype demonstrated approximately 3 CFM more airflow than the OEM valve at .500" lift while actually being slightly smaller in diameter.
That's exactly what we wanted to see before approving the design for production.
Flow-Tested Against the OEM GM Ecotec Exhaust Valve
We don't want customers to have to rely solely on claims about what a valve should do.
We tested it.
On the same cylinder head and under the same flow-bench conditions at MWR Technologies:
| Valve | Head Diameter | Exhaust Flow |
|---|---|---|
| OEM GM Ecotec Exhaust Valve | Approx. 30.1 mm | Baseline |
| BK Racing Prototype Exhaust Valve | Approx. 29.9 mm | +3 CFM |
| BK Racing Production Exhaust Valve | 30.10–30.20 mm | Additional testing forthcoming |
The early BK Racing prototype showed an approximately 3 CFM improvement despite being roughly .2 mm smaller than the finalized production specification.
We will continue testing the production valves against OEM and leading aftermarket Ecotec exhaust valves and publish the results as that testing is completed.
21-4N Stainless Steel Ecotec Exhaust Valves
Exhaust-valve material matters, especially in engines subjected to sustained RPM and high exhaust temperatures.
BK Racing Ecotec exhaust valves are manufactured from 21-4N stainless steel, a high-temperature austenitic valve steel widely suited to demanding exhaust-valve applications.
We selected 21-4N because these valves were developed primarily around the demands we see in naturally aspirated, high-RPM and circle-track Ecotec engines.
Our priorities were:
High-temperature strength • fatigue resistance • wear resistance • dimensional stability • durability under sustained RPM
But selecting the material was only part of the process.
Why Our Ecotec Exhaust Valves Are Nitrided After Final Machining
Not all nitrided valves are created the same.
BK Racing Ecotec exhaust valves are finish-machined first and nitrided afterward.
We specified that manufacturing sequence intentionally.
Nitriding produces a hardened surface layer that can improve wear, scuff and surface resistance. If critical areas of a valve are machined or ground after nitriding, some of the treated surface can be removed.
We didn't want to manufacture them that way.
The required machining and final geometry are completed first. The finished valve then receives its nitriding treatment.
That allows us to retain the treated surface through important areas of the finished valve, including the stem, keeper grooves and extended valve tip.
For a component expected to survive thousands of cycles at sustained racing RPM, we know the details matter.
Finish the valve first. Then nitride the finished component.
30.10–30.20 mm Stock-Size Ecotec Exhaust Valve
Final production valve-head diameter is:
30.10–30.20 mm
We intentionally remained essentially within the OEM Ecotec exhaust-valve diameter rather than relying on a +0.5 mm or +1 mm oversized valve to generate airflow.
This makes the BK Racing valve particularly attractive to builders looking for a high-flow stock-size Ecotec exhaust valve.
The philosophy behind the design is simple:
Make the shape work before making the valve bigger.
Airflow-Optimized Valve Profile
An exhaust valve isn't simply an on/off seal.
While the valve is open, its head and backside become part of the airflow path leaving the combustion chamber.
The BK Racing valve incorporates a carefully developed backside profile, flat chamber-side face and smooth transition toward the stem. Development focused on reducing unnecessary obstruction while maintaining the material required for a durable racing exhaust valve.
This is where our valve differs substantially from simply duplicating the OEM shape in a different material.
+.050" Extended Valve Tip
BK Racing Ecotec exhaust valves incorporate a +.050" extended valve tip above the keeper location.
Why?
Modified Ecotec valvetrains—particularly those using reduced-base-circle or reground camshafts—can change the operating position and geometry of the finger follower.
The extended tip provides the engine builder with additional geometry to help establish the correct follower position.
Proper geometry helps maintain the intended follower motion and effective rocker relationship throughout the valve event, rather than allowing a reduced camshaft base circle to unnecessarily compromise the valvetrain geometry.
This feature was incorporated specifically because of the combinations we see in serious Ecotec racing engines.
Designed as Part of a Complete BK Racing Ecotec Valvetrain
A performance exhaust valve is only one component of the valvetrain.
As RPM and camshaft demands increase, valve control becomes increasingly important.
That's why the BK Racing exhaust valve was developed alongside components we already use in high-RPM Ecotec racing applications.
Pair With BK Racing 83 lb Ecotec Valve Springs
For higher-RPM and more aggressive camshaft combinations, our BK Racing 83 lb Single Valve Springs provide approximately 83 lb of seat pressure at a 1.325" installed height and approximately 230 lb at .500" lift.
These springs have been tested in Ecotec applications to approximately 9,300 RPM.
For customers building a complete performance Ecotec cylinder head, the BK Racing exhaust valves and 83 lb springs provide a combination developed around the same objective:
reliable valve control at sustained racing RPM without unnecessarily complicating the valvetrain.
Pair With BK Racing Ecotec Solid Lash Adjusters
For race combinations requiring more precise mechanical valve control, BK Racing also offers Ecotec Solid Lash Adjusters.
Our solid lash-adjuster combinations allow builders to establish mechanical lash rather than relying on the factory hydraulic lash-adjuster system.
BK Racing's typical starting lash specification is:
Intake: .008"
Exhaust: .010"
Final lash should always be established for the specific camshaft and engine combination.
Combined with the BK Racing exhaust valves, valve springs, retainers, spring seats and seals, these components allow builders to develop a more complete Ecotec racing valvetrain system rather than selecting unrelated components individually.

Circle-track Ecotec engines • high-RPM naturally aspirated builds • performance cylinder heads • modified camshaft combinations • reground camshafts • competition engines • performance 2.2L Ecotec builds • performance 2.4L Ecotec builds
Specific engine and cylinder-head compatibility should always be verified before installation.
Are Oversized Ecotec Exhaust Valves Better?
Not necessarily.
Increasing valve diameter can increase potential curtain area, but diameter alone does not determine cylinder-head airflow.
The valve must work with the valve seat, throat, port and combustion chamber.
That's one reason BK Racing concentrated first on optimizing a stock-size 30.1–30.2 mm Ecotec exhaust valve.
Our development testing demonstrated that changing the valve design itself could produce measurable airflow improvement without increasing valve diameter.
For builders considering +0.5 mm or +1 mm oversized Ecotec exhaust valves, this is an important distinction.
Bigger and better are not automatically the same thing.
