35.6 mm Ecotec Intake Valves: Curtain Area, Valve Size & Shrouding
What Changes When Diameter Increases?
At a given lift, a larger valve has a longer circumference. A simple nominal curtain-area approximation is π × diameter × lift. This is useful for comparing geometry, but it does not include every seat angle, flow coefficient, pressure difference or chamber restriction.
For a 35.6 mm valve compared with a 35.1 mm reference at the same lift, the diameter ratio is 35.6 ÷ 35.1, or approximately 1.014. That represents about 1.4% more nominal circumference-based curtain area. It does not mean 1.4% more power.
A Worked Low-Lift Example
At .050-inch lift, lift is 1.27 mm. The simple area reference is approximately 142.0 mm² for 35.6 mm and 140.0 mm² for 35.1 mm. The small geometric difference helps explain why valve diameter alone cannot account for every change observed on a flow bench.
The HF35.6 also changes the backside and stem geometry. The reported approximately +10 CFM prototype result measures a test combination; it should not be presented as the mathematical consequence of adding 0.5 mm to the head.
The Chamber and Seat Can Limit the Result
A larger valve can sit closer to the chamber wall, which can restrict the path available to air. The throat and seat can also become the limiting sections. Increasing one dimension without considering those relationships may deliver less than expected.
This is why seat-contact location, chamber clearance and the actual flow curve matter. Cylinder-head preparation should support the selected valve while preserving appropriate seat and chamber structure. Do not remove material simply to match a nominal diameter rule.
Use Diameter as a Starting Specification
Compare the actual valve and head with the size guide, then establish the installation clearances. Piston-to-valve and valve-to-valve clearance remain necessary checks even if the valve moves freely in the guide.
When ordering the intake and exhaust set, remember that its exhaust valves retain stock-size exhaust architecture. The +0.5 mm intake designation does not describe both sides of the head.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does more curtain area guarantee more CFM?
No. It is a geometric reference; effective flow depends on the assembled head.
Does more CFM guarantee the same percentage gain in horsepower?
No. Engine output depends on the complete combination and operating conditions.
